What is the aim of this review?

While there are no new or updated Cochrane publications to report this month (Issue 2, 2023 of the Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews), we’d like to highlight the following items from the CIDG editorial base: MedRxiv preprint

Cochrane Infectious Diseases has produced dozens of reviews on the prevention and treatment of malaria. These include interventions, such as drugs, taken by people, as well as some at the level of the environment. One of these looks at house modifications for preventing malaria and lead author, Tilly Fox from the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine in the UK tells us about the importance of the October 2022 update and its findings.

What is the aim of this review?The aim of this Cochrane Review was to assess if diarrhoea is reduced by sanitation interventions to provide, upgrade, or encourage people to use toilets or latrines. We collected and analysed all relevant studies of certain prespecified rigorous study design types and found 51 studies involving 238,535 people.

Cephalosporin antibiotics for the treatment of enteric fever (typhoid fever)Key messages• There may be no difference in the performance of ceftriaxone (a type of cephalosporin) compared with azithromycin, fluoroquinolones, or chloramphenicol (other antimicrobial medicines) for adults and children with enteric fever (typhoid fever).
