Tuberculosis has been killing people for centuries and the prospect of a vaccine to stop this has eluded scientists for years.

This year’s Cochrane UK & Cochrane Ireland Symposium took place at the Saïd Business School, Oxford. The theme of the symposium was “Inspiring innovation – ensuring quality”, and CIDG members, Marty Richardson (Statistician) and Vittoria Lutje (Information Specialist), joined Cochrane colleagues from all over the UK and Ireland at the event.

Tuberculosis (TB) causes more deaths globally than any other infectious disease and is a top 10 cause of death worldwide.

The Cochrane Infectious Diseases Group  (CIDG), which has its editorial base at LSTM, helps prepare systematic reviews related to the diagnosis and treatment of tuberculosis.

LSTM's Centre for Evidence Synthesis in Global Health has led developments in systematic reviews in tropical medicine and international health. In the 1990s, staff contributed to setting up Cochrane, and established the Cochrane Infectious Diseases Group (CIDG). This is now recognised as one of Cochrane's premier groups, with over 150 Cochrane reviews and 600 authors, and is well-linked with the World Health Organization.

 In this report, we meet Anel Schoonees, who works with the CIDG editorial base as an Information Specialist with a special focus on the HIV portfolio. Could you describe where you currently work and what you do there?

The World Health Organization published Guidelines for malaria vector control  this week, drawing on seven Cochrane reviews specially prepared for them by the Cochrane Infectious Diseases Group (CIDG).
